McFadzean, who had expressed his wish to leave the Dons and had fallen out with boss Karl Robinson as a result, had been a target for Chris Wilder for much of the summer, but a switch to Bramall Lane, where the player had begun his career, was held up by Robinson's reluctance to sell to another League One club.

Despite signing James Wilson, Jack O'Connell and Jake Wright, United continued their pursuit of McFadzean, but former boss Nigel Clough has nipped in to keep the player in the Championship.

McFadzean told the Burton Mail: "I'm delighted we have got the deal over the line and I'm raring to go now," said the defender. "The gaffer was a big reason for me to come here and Championship football again. He believes in me and I can't wait to get started. I have had a few weeks light training on my own and I can't wait to join the lads. I want to make sure I'm fully fit and ready to go for that first game of the season."

Boss Clough said of the player: "We have watched him extensively and we think he was the best centre half in League One and I think he'll be better this time making the step up thanks to his previous experience in the Championship."
