Sheffield United: Blades giving Che Adams a helping hand

Nigel Adkins, the Sheffield United manager, has addressed Che Adams' situation at Bramall Lane after confronting reports the youngster is being monitored by several Premier League clubs.

Adkins, who refuted claims Manchester City and AFC Bournemouth made approaches for Adams before Saturday’s game against Swindon Town, reiterated United do not plan to part company with any of their leading names during this month’s transfer window.

Adams recently served a three-match suspension following his red card during the FA Cup victory over Oldham Athletic on December 5 and Adkins told The Star: “Che was in the team, then got sent off and so there were a lot of things going on behind the scenes that people don’t see.

“We’re helping him football and career wise and he’s coming along nicely.

“That’s what we are endeavouring to do. That’s the culture we want to have and, let’s be honest, we’ve established that well at other clubs we’ve been at in the past. It’s something we place a great deal of emphasis on.”

Adams, signed by Adkins’ predecessor, Nigel Clough, has been a professional for only 14 months after joining United from non-league Ilkeston. The teenager has since been capped by England at under-20 level.

Adkins, previously of Scunthorpe and Southampton, added: “The objective is always to keep our best players. I didn’t want Jamie (Murphy) to go (to Brighton and Hove Albion), for example, during the last window.

“Maybe Jamie wanted something different from his point of view. We’ve not had one phone call regarding Che.

“He’s still learning and understanding the standards of being a professional at a top football club. We are helping him with that process all the time, the same as we do with all the young players.”
