McCabe, the League One club’s co-owner and benefactor, insisted Adkins is “better qualified than many” of his predecessors to deliver promotion when he addressed the media earlier this month.

McCabe, who was speaking after criticism of United’s recent performances and results, met Adkins for dinner before Saturday’s game at Rochdale with a number of subjects, including plans for the emergency loan window, thought to have been discussed.

“That support was good news,” Adkins said. “There’s a positivity about the place and we are striving very hard to do well.

“We’ve already been planning pre-season. I’ve got a three-year contract and you’ve got to believe that you’ll see that out.”

Adkins took charge in the close season when Nigel Clough, whose Burton Albion side visits United tomorrow, was dismissedafter May’s play-off semi-final defeat by Swindon Town.

Clough returned to Albion, where he cut his managerial teeth, earlier this season.

“We’ve talked about targets for next season although obviously it will depend which division we are in” Adkins said.

“Everybody here is fighting for a contract.”
