The left-back made his first start in exactly two months at the Macron Stadium on Sunday, but couldn’t prevent United tumbling out of the competition 3-2 despite goals from captain Paul Coutts and Jack O’Connell.

As a result, United are absent from the third-round draw for the first time since the early 1980s and Hussey, who could drop to the bench in favour of Daniel Lafferty for the visit of Swindon Town on Saturday, insists that they want to make amends.

“We wanted to get through,” Hussey said.

“The gaffer [Chris Wider] demands we give everything in every game, that’s the minimum. But now we’ve got to focus on the league and put things right in that.

“Get back to doing what we were doing. We’ve shown what we can do so we can do it again. We’re in a good position and we want to kick on.”

United, who saw their 15-match unbeaten run in the league ended by Walsall at Bramall Lane a week ago, remain third in the League One table and trail Sunday’s opponents, in second, by two points.

United saw their U23 game at Birmingham City last night postponed due to a frozen pitch.
