As The Star predicted yesterday, Sheffield United expected the Championship club to make a second approach after rejecting a £1.2m bid earlier this month.

City manager Rowett has admitted that Adams, who appeared as a second-half substitute during last night’s friendly with Derby County, remains one of his leading transfer targets.

“Quite a bit has come out in the press already, we have had a couple of bids in and it’s all down to what Sheffield United want to do,” he said. “Like we have said before, he is their player, it is their prerogative to do whatever they want.

“I know Chris (Wilder) really well, he’s a real good guy and I wouldn’t try to scupper any plans he has got. But if the lad is available and if we can find the right price then I think he has got huge potential.”

Adams has scored 15 goals in 54 outings for United since arriving from Ilkeston two years ago. The former Coventry City trainee signed a new contract before Wilder’s appointment as manager in May. United unveiled former Sheffield Wednesday centre-forward Leon Clarke ahead of County’s visit but sources at Bramall Lane later confirmed his arrival was not linked to City’s interest in Adams.

Rowett said: “If I am being really honest my preference at this moment of time is to bring players into the building that are our players, that have got potential and are going to be hungry. I think that suits our style, provided they can give us the relevant quality as well.

“He is one of a number of players we are trying to get on board. It’s ironic because I think I saw about another six or seven managers all saying the same thing. We are still chasing the striker, we have got bids in’.

“You can look at it if (Ross) McCormack goes from Fulham it will probably start a chain of about five or six striker moves.

“We have still got time, we will make signings. I know there is a frustration around to do that but I think that’s modern day. Last week I thought I was getting sacked before the start of the season the way some of the people are reacting. It’s instant success we all crave for, I get that and understand it.”
