The former Sheffield Wednesday centre-forward, who is expected to leave Gigg Lane this summer, features on a list of potential targets compiled by manager Chris Wilder and his coaching staff.

Although talks have progressed since The Star confirmed United’s interest, City have emerged as a potential rival after Tony Mowbray, Wilder’s counterpart at the Ricoh Arena, also began exploring the possibility of recruiting Clarke.

The 31-year-old spent 12 months with City before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2014.

Despite Mowbray’s decision to enter the fray, United remain hopeful of unveiling Clarke before the transfer window closes next month. Defender Chris Hussey arrived at Bramall Lane from Bury soon after Wilder’s appointment in May while John Fleck, previously of Rangers, elected to join United rather than agree a new contract with City a fortnight ago.

Bury captain Nathan Cameron recently admitted Clarke is a wanted-man but urged his team mate to stay at the club.

“Teams are always going to come in for your best players, especially if they’re scoring 15 plus goals a season,” Cameron said. “But he is a crucial part of our team and it would be great to have him here next year.”

Clarke scored 18 goals in 37 appearances for Bury last season, including one during their 3-1 victory over United in September.

Meanwhile, United have announced that less than 450 tickets remain on sale for Saturday’s match against Grimsby Town (Kick-off 3pm).

They will remain on sale until noon tomorrow unless already sold out. Entrance will not be available at Blundell Park on the day.
