Ninth-placed United remain five points off Millwall, in sixth, after their disappointing defeat to Bury on Tuesday evening, which came courtesy of Craig Jones’ strike.

The Shakers had shipped nine goals in their previous two games before beating Adkins’ side, who have now only tasted victory once in their last five.

They return to action this weekend at Bramall Lane against Port Vale - a place behind them in the table, on the same number of points - and Adkins admitted: “We tried to be positive and force the play. We went to three at the back in an endeavour to try and win.

“But because we haven’t, the repercussions are obviously going to be there and people will be despondent.

“We are Sheffield United and we want to be going to the next level.

“But, at this moment in time, we are mid-table in League One and that’s not good enough.

“Everyone is going to be upset; the fans made their feelings know, and no-one is more upset than myself because I want us to be pushing on.

“We’ve had words in the dressing room and I’m not going to apportion blame; at the end of the day, I am the manager of this football club. It’s up to me to do as much as I can to get the players we have performing, and give the fans something to cheer.”

Neill Collins, who injured his ankle in the weekend win at Doncaster, missed out at Bury but Adkins says he should be back for the Port Vale game.
