Sheffield trams cancelled and diverted due to assault which left man in hospital

Some trams have been cancelled or diverted this afternoon because of a police incident.

Stagecoach Supertram announced that ‘due to a police incident at Hillsborough Park’ Yellow route trams have been diverted to Malin Bridge.

At least one tram from Middlewood has been cancelled as well.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “Emergency services received a call at 4.58pm regarding an incident on Middlewood Road at the junction with Dykes Hall Road on Hillsborough.

“Police and ambulance teams are currently at the scene.

“At this moment in time, we can’t provide any more details.”

Stagecoach has issued an update with more cancellations.

It said: “Due to ongoing incident, Yellow route Hillsborough to Middlewood diverted. 17:26 Middlewood cancelled.”

UPDATE: Trams in Middlewood have now resumed normal service. An update on the incident is expected from the police shortly.

UPDATE 2: South Yorkshire Police has confirmed that the incident was a fight between two men aged in their 30s.

The incident happened on Dyke Hall Road outside B&M Bargains. A 36-year-old man was taken to the Northern General Hospital after sustaining injuries from an assault.

There were no reports of any weapons being involved.
