Sheffield Tigers scrape home and Sheffield RUFC move up to third after a five-point win

Sheffield Tigers scraped a 22-21 win at Hull to retain their National Three North lead, and in the process did city rivals Sheffield a big favour.

For while Hull, previously in third position, had only a losing bonus to show for their efforts, Sheffield took their place in the top three with a 27-23 victory over Rossendale at Abbeydale Park.

Centre Henri Packard scored two tries, with fly-half Mark Ireland converting both to make it 14-3 to Tigers.

Hull hit back to lead, but Alex Graham scored for Tigers in the last minute to take the win.

While Tigers were denied a bonus on this occasion, Sheffield ran in four tries to pick up five league points in their home win over Rossendale.

Flanker Alex Fawdry got them off the mark after 11 minutes, and others came from winger Rupert Broadley and prop Danny Rylands, Joe Cribley converting to make it 19-6, but Rossendale closed the gap with a late try to leave the score balanced at 19-13 at the break.

Gareth Morley raced over on the wing to put Sheffield 24-13 ahead, but Rossendale hit back to 24-23 with a converted try and penalty. However, Cribley added a late penalty to make sure of the win.

Dinnington made good use of the wind in the first half and turned round 14-12 ahead before slumping to a 26-14 defeat in their North One East match at previously lower placed Pocklington.

Dinnington produced first-half tries by flanker Tom Doughty and centre Sam Crane, both converted by fly-half Jonny West, but that was as far as they went and Pocklington clinched a bonus point with their fourth try in the last ten minutes.

Sheffield Medicals ran in two tries in the final ten minutes but were kept out 20-12 as visitors West Leeds maintained their lead in Yorkshire Two.

In another Yorkshire Two match, Barnsley went down to a narrow 11-8 defeat away at Wath on Dearne.
