Sheffield Tigers ace happy behind the scenes

Ashley Birks insists he has no regrets over his decision to quit the sport over the winter.

The former Sheffield Tigers’ racer was a firm favourite on the Owlerton terraces before he announced his retirement at the end of last season following a series of injuries.

He has now moved behind the scenes having been appointed as Commercial Manager of the club – a role he believes suits him down to the ground.

And although the door is firmly closed on his riding career, he hasn’t ruled out the prospect of taking some practice laps at Owlerton over the course of the season.

Birks said: “It’s a bit strange not to be riding heading into the new season, but it was a decision I made to further my future and I definitely didn’t take it lightly.

“I’ve done what I think is right, I have no regrets and I’m really pleased with the way things are going in my new role as Commercial Manager” said Birks.

“I might be done with riding speedway but I still wanted to stay involved and there is no better place than Sheffield.

“It’s my local club, I have a great relationship with everyone here and this way I’ll still be able to have a skid occasionally if I ever fancy it.

“I think this role suits me well to be honest.

“I’ve always enjoyed meeting with people and looking after people which is what this entails.

“Things are already going well, we’ve got a couple of new sponsors on board and I’m really enjoying it.”

Tigers are back in action tomorrow when they face Peterborough at Owlerton with skipper Simon Stead set to return and finally get his comeback season up and running.

Stead crashed at the Ben Fund Charity meeting over a fortnight ago and suffered from concussion – but he’s been back training and looks ready to lead the Tigers challenge against his former club.
