Sheffield Tigers 54 Glasgow 38

Sensational Sheffield put in their performance of the season to claim a convincing 54-38 win over title favourites Glasgow at Owlerton.

The Tigers put in a terrific team display to earn their first Premier League points of the campaign with a resounding win over the powerhouse Scottish outfit.

Glasgow travelled to Yorkshire fresh off the back of a club record 71-19 win over Scunthorpe last week – but they were sent a clear message by a Sheffield side with title ambitions of their own.

Skipper Simon Stead struck a second successive paid maximum whilst Dimitri Berge and Jason Garrity suffered just one defeat apiece as they comfortably nullified the visitors’ top-end strength with a powerful display.

Stead and Berge once again got the hosts off to a dream start with a 5-1 in the opening race – and when they combined for a second time in heat six it gave them a comfortable 16-point cushion.

The spectacular Garrity excellently saw off Glasgow’s tactical ride threat as he took the chequered flag ahead of Richie Worrall in heat seven.

Further wins for Berge and the impressive Josh Bates preserved their advantage before Stead brilliantly battled to the front alongside Berge for the third time to all but secure victory in heat 10.

With Stead, Garrity and Berge in scintillating form plus Barnsley boy Bates back to his best, they recorded 11 race wins with all four ending with double figures.

Aussie reserve Arthur Sissis also struck a hugely encouraging race win in heat two on his comeback after nine months out.

Teenage racer Nathan Greaves also claimed the impressive scalp of Aaron Summers to earn his only point in heat four to help them seize control of the meeting early on.

The Tigers travel to Berwick tomorrow (7pm) looking to claim their first away win of the Premier League campaign.
