Sheffield Theatres favourite Richard Wilson suffers heart attack

The 80-year-old was in a stable condition in hospital in London, his agent John Grant confirmed.

Richard, who became a big favourite with TV audiences as the grouchy Victor Meldrew in the sitcom One Foot in the Grave, has worked for several seasons at Sheffield Theatres as an associate director since 2010.

His most recent play, snooker comedy The Nap at the Crucible in March, starred Unbroken and Skins actor Jack O’Connell, Royal Family star Ralf Little and Mark Addy from HBO smash hit Game of Thrones and The Full Monty.

Richard has championed new writing during his time at Sheffield Theatres, directing Straight, Love Your Soldiers, The Pride, That Face and Lungs.

A statement said: “Due to ill health, Richard Wilson has taken the decision, to take some time out.

“He is sorry to have to disappoint those hoping to see him in Edinburgh. We hope to plan further shows for later in the year.”
