Sheffield Council house tenants are urged to ‘put their rent first’at Christmas.

Tenants who have a clear rent account or have signed up to a repayment agreement by January 1 will be entered into a free prize draw to win £250.

It is part of a campaign which highlights the need for people to keep up with rent payments during the traditional two rent-free weeks from Monday December 22, and take advantage of the opportunity to clear or reduce their arrears.

Tenants failing to pay their rent risk losing their homes.

Every tenant in arrears will be contacted with details of the draw and reminded to continue to make payments over Christmas.

Those in difficulty will be encouraged to contact the council to arrange a payment plan.

Coun Harry Harpham, cabinet member for homes, said: “We know times are hard and that there are lots of pressures on people’s purses at Christmas. However it is important tenants in arrears continue to pay during rent free weeks, so they can try to catch up and make sure their home is safe.”
