A TEENAGER from Sheffield will help people in Uganda overcome daily struggles to collect water and find firewood.
Michael Smith is travelling to the country for eight weeks to complete projects that will overhaul the way residents go about their daily lives.
Tasks include building a 10,000-litre water tank, teaching sanitation in schools and showing villagers how to construct fuel efficient stoves so they need less firewood.
The 19-year-old, of Meadowhead, said: “I thought this would be an opportunity to see how I can make a difference, rather than just giving money and not seeing where it goes.
“The use of firewood for cooking in Uganda is high and this means it is used rapidly. We will teach the community how to construct fuel-efficient stoves, these use less fuel and produce less smoke.”
The former Birkdale School student is setting off on his epic journey on Monday, June 25, but needs to raise £710 to take him there first and also has to pay for his flights.
