Sheffield Taekwondo among medals in world championship

Family club Sheffield Tae Kwon Do were among the medals at the world championship where 24 of their members competed over two days at Birmingham Arena.

Several families were suffessful for the Sheffield club, run by Graham Churchill 7th Dan Tae Kwon Do instructor for Sheffield, who founded the class in 1990, and hs been teaching professionally for 27 years.

Medal winners included Jane Avgousti, who took bronze in patterns and silver in sparring and her eight-year-old daughter Amber Avgousti, bronze in patterns and silver in sparring, and son Finlay, bronze in patterns and sparring. Another family, father and daughter Darren Salkeld won bronze in sparring, and Grace bronze in sparring and gold in team.

Ged Morris won silvers in both sparring and patterns.

Churchill, one of the chief umpires, said: “In all my years in martial arts I have not seen an event on this scale, and so professionally run , since I competed in the battle of Atlanta in 1992, one of the biggest tournaments in the world.”
