Sheffield students awarded for speaking

Organised by Business in the Community and partner businesses & secondary schools, the Speak Out competition took place at University of Sheffield’s Management School with 5 different schools participating and arguing why the area around their schools should be chosen for redevelopment.

Although Fir Vale School won the overall competition, the Yewlands students were visited by colleagues from Irwin Mitchell Solicitors and applauded for their innovative presentation delivered, receiving the Irwin Mitchell Pioneering award.

Karen Codling, Associate Director at Irwin Mitchell said “Irwin Mitchell provided mentors supporting one of the groups who entered and it was brilliant to see the final presentations which were given. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to be involved and we wanted to present an award to the students who it was felt were the most creative and innovative in their approach to the competition brief.”

Lindi Edis, who led the school group, added “The pupils were fantastic and a real credit to the school. They worked hard and put in a lot of time resulting in a brilliant presentation. Students have said that the competition boosted their confidence and their ability to speak publically and we are extremely proud of their achievements.”

Business in the Community and their partnerships hope to be able to run the competition again next year.
