A SHEFFIELD University student hailed as an inspiration to others has been honoured.

Ramona Pergel was one of four finalists in the 2012 Independent Student of the Year award, run by the Master of Business.

The award honours people who use their degrees to drive positive change in education.

Ramona, aged 34, originally from Romania, is studying general management at the university’s international faculty in Thessaloniki, Greece.

On top of this, she has helped communities affected by disasters for the past three years.

Her work ranges from developing education and cultural projects, to providing medical care, supporting socially-vulnerable people and encouraging volunteering activities in her role as corporate social responsibility ambassador for energy giant e.on.

Ramona, who narrowly missed out on the award at the ceremony in London, said: “Being shortlisted was a wonderful surprise and I feel as though it is a wonderful acknowledgment of my work and also a way of repaying the professors.”
