Sheffield streets set to come alive this weekend as part of SheFest

A series of talks, events and workshops are being held in Sheffield at the weekend to celebrate women, as part of International Women's Day.

SheFest is back for 2017 with a variety of inclusive events as part of the city-wide festival, which kicked off on March 6 and is running until Sunday.

And now SheFest organisers are urging Sheffield women to come together for the largely-free festival events, to ‘learn, explore, discuss and have fun.’

The main event will be held along The Moor on Saturday featuring music, dancing and family activities.

National Citizen Service member Evie Muir has been working with SheFest project leaders to help organise events and urged people to join in the fun.

She said: "I love getting involved with International Women’s Day as it’s such an important opportunity for raising awareness, and engaging with gender issues within our local, national and global community."

The festival, now in its second year, starts at 11am with a performance by the Sheffield University Samba Band, before the Hype Dance group showcase their talents.

A contemporary dance piece has been prepared by Janka Kormos highlighting womanhood and gender, while the Romano Jilo troupe is promising an insight into Roma culture.

At Theatre Delicatessen - the old Woolworth’s shop - there will be a choice of 10 free workshops, ranging from lessons in belly dancing to an exploration of sexual consent. Taster sessions all last less than an hour, and must be booked in advance.

There will also be market stalls and refreshments - including gluten-free cake and tea until 5pm. Festivities are set to continue into the evening with an international fashion show at the Broomhall Community Centre and a club night at the Great Gatsby on Division Street.

A charity fashion show in aid of Macmillan and City Hearts will take place at the Novotel hotel on Arundel Gate from midday to 5pm on Saturday, showcasing garments by female designers. And events wind up on Sunday when the Sunday Assembly gathering will be entertained by comedian and artist Chella Quint. The show starts at 11am at DINA on Cambridge Street in the city centre.

International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8 every year and commemorates the movement for women's rights.
