Sheffield Steelers lose top '˜plus-minus' player

The mobile defenceman, 25, has informed Steelers that he won’t be returning for a second season with the Elite League champions.

Coyle joined Paul Thompson’s side from Denmark’s Aalborg Pirates where the two had previously worked together and was recognised as one of the club’s top players.

In Sheffield, the Canadian’s form sometimes divided opinion - some fans felt his offensive, fast-skating style was a huge asset, others were critical of his defensive prowess.

“I’m disappointed to be losing Jace” said Thompson.

“He was our top plus-minus player last season and I thought he played well for us all year.

“He is getting married this summer and his new wife holds down an excellent job over there. Jace also wants another crack at the American League and he has some opportunities to break in to that. We wish him well, he was a credit from the day he arrived. He did everything I asked him to do and played hard for us game-in, game-out. He had a terrific time here in Sheffield but it’s time for him to make some big decisions as far as both his family life and career are concerned. We wish him well.”
