Sheffield Steelers 3 Fife Flyers 1 - Lawrence could be set for Steelers exit

The gangly import forward, whose temporary contract has covered 17 games so far, was last night dropped for a second time by coach Paul Thompson. The decision comes as other Elite League clubs are pondering making an offer to him covering the rest of the season.

With rumoured interest from his old club Nottingham, and possibly Braehead Clan, Lawrence could be on his way, with Thompson studying the market to see if a better player is available.

Last night, Jeff Legue was restored to the line-up and he was Sheffield’s liveliest forward in the early part. Jace Coyle had an interesting first period.

It was his howler that set up a Fife attack which ended with Marek Pinc being injured after having to make a save at 5;21.

Five minutes later Coyle supported the attack and was on hand to stroke a Colton Fretter rebound into the net.

Steelers enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession but were guilty of three other give-aways in their own zone.

Visiting goalie David Brown was caught out at the start of the second, Fretter’s blast beating him via Tyler Mosienko’s chest.

And it was 3-0 at 33;06, when Guillaume Desbiens scored his first Arena goal.

He shrugged off Michael Dorr on a short-handed breakaway and wafted the puck past Brown. The home fans were still getting back into their seats when Fife hit back, Shayne Stockton burying a rebound.

Thompson’s vocal chords peeled the paint off the dressing room walls at the second interval, such was his frustration that Fife were still in the game.

His team responded by sustaining pressure on the opposing net for the last segment, but they couldn’t improve the scoreline.

Rob Dowd just fail to capitalise on a chance at the back stick, Levi Nelson missed on a wrap-around and Fretter, having robbed the puck off Kyle Horne, raced clear towards the goalie, who managed to flip his shot over the bar.

On Saturday, Russ Cowley and Brett Robinson scored as Coventry Blaze shut out Steelers in a 2-0 win. It was the first time this season Steelers have failed to score.

They outshot the hosts 48-18 and hit the pipework four times, the best example being Mosienko’s penalty shot striking the post. Lawrence had a decent - but didn’t seem to shoot enough.

It was Blaze’s first win over Steelers at their fourth attempt.

Sheffield host Edinburgh on Wednesday.
