Sheffield squash champion praises university fundraisers

Members of The University of Sheffield’s squash team are to swap their rackets for their running shoes when they take part in the Plusnet’s Yorkshire Half Marathon in Sheffield later this month.

The students have agreed to take part in the challenge to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which many of them pass every day on their way to their lectures and to play sport.

Sheffield-born Nick Matthews, a three time world champion, said: “It’s great to hear the University of Sheffield squash team are supporting a charity which is close to my heart.

“I know that the funds raised will be used for incredibly important work in supporting lots of brave children.

“I’ve got strong links with the university and have trained with some members of the university team at Hallamshire Squash Club and can vouch for their fitness, although they’ll need to pace themselves and remember it’s a half marathon, not a sprint.”

Squash team member George Matthews, 22, said: “As a student at the University of Sheffield we see Sheffield Children’s Hospital every day. The hospital is always busy with patients when walking to lectures and it’s hard to imagine Sheffield without it. We all agreed it would be a worthy recipient of our fundraising activities.”
