July 13 1996 saw your Star spotlight seven marching bands among those celebrating Sheffield's City of Sport and Culture status.

More than 30 floats took part in a Junior Chamber of Commerce procession that followed Children's Festival Parade.

The theme was set by sports-mad then mayor Coun Peter Price with thousands of pounds raised for his youth group charities.

He said at the time: "It is less than 10 years ago that Sheffield decided to use sport and culture as one piece of the jigsaw in the rebuilding and regeneration of our city after the ravages of the recession in the 1980s.

"We have managed, in just a short time, to turn Sheffield into Britain's City of Sport".
