Star man Stead will be partnered by Kyle Howarth in the showpiece event at the Oaktree Arena, Somerset after Jason Garrity was injured.

The experienced racer has backed young gun Howarth to rise to the occasion and continue the fine form he has shown at Premier League level since his switch to Owlerton. Having also overcome some issues of his own, Stead believes the duo have what it takes to win.

“I’m looking forward to the Pairs,” said Stead. “It’s our first chance to get some serious silverware for Sheffield this year, and I’m confident we can do a good job. Kyle is riding well, so I think he’s capable of rising to the occasion and scoring plenty of points.

“We’ve lost Jason for a few weeks which is a blow, but the beauty about the Sheffield team this year as there are people who can step up.

“It’s nice to be able to bring in Kyle and I don’t think we are particularly weakened by it, with how he’s riding.

“I’ve identified a few things that haven’t quite been right for me so far, and I’m also starting to feel a lot better again. A lack of track time recently has been frustrating, but I’m moving in the right direction and I believe I can do the job I need to at Somerset.

“It’s a good track that produces some great races, and it’s always a hugely competitive meeting. The line-up looks strong so I’m sure this year will be no different, but hopefully myself and Kyle can work together to come out on top.”
