Sheffield Speedway ace's season is over

Dimitri Berge has joined Jason Garrity on the Sheffield Tigers' injury list and will miss next week's play-offs with Glasgow.

Berge crashed heavily in the World Under-21 Final in Poland at the weekend and news came through from hospital that he has sustained a broken wrist.

Tigers are also likely to be without Simon Stead for the battle with Glasgow – and that would mean club bosses looking for two guests and applying the rider replacement facility for one.

With Ricky Wells now finished at Workington there is every chance Sheffield could reward the American for his heroics in the quarter-final at Newcastle by snapping him up for the semis.

Said Berge: “My season is over.

“The hospital have confirmed I have broken my wrist and obviously I’m disappointed about it with some big meetings to come.

“I’ve enjoyed my season and to finish fifth in the World Under-21 Final isn’t too bad for my first attempt.”

Tigers co-promoter Peter Mole has described Berge as the signing of the season in the Premier League.

Mole must now get together with colleague Damien Bates to weigh up the options to patch the side up for the Glasgow clashes.

Tigers host the first leg at Owlerton on Thursday October 13 with the return in Scotland the following Sunday, October 16.

Garrity remains on the sidelines with an arm injury and Stead is still having problems with his foot.

Said Bates: “I don’t know on Steady yet, he might ride or he might not, I guess we’ll have a chat over the weekend to establish what his chances are.

“It would be nice to think we have the Premier League Riders’ Champion available and fit to lead our challenge, but it’s probably too early to tell.”
