Sheffield shop stars in TV comedy about rap legends' Public Enemy lift to city gig in Ford Focus
A Sheffield record shop is set to take a starring role in a new Sky TV comedy about the day rap legends Public Enemy were given a lift to a gig in the city in the back of a Ford Focus.
Record Collector in Broomhill will feature in the episode of Urban Myths which tells the story of how the American rappers were forced to grab a lift with a fan to a concert at Sheffield Arena.
The story became a global web sensation and went viral - and made an unlikely star out of fan and photographer Kevin Wells who ferried the band to the venue in his trusty Ford Focus.
The band were taking part at a signing session at the shop on Fulwood Road when a taxi taking them to a support slot with The Prodigy drove off without them.
Kevin stepped in to offer his services and the rest, as they say, is history.
A mock-up of the store, accurately reproducing artist Martin Bedford’s shopfront logos and typefaces, was created in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, to film an episode of the Sky Arts series which will air next month.
The programme, which will be shown on May 24, recounts the 2015 trip across the city with Kevin played by Life On Mars Philip Glenister.
Said shop owner Barry Everard: “Public Enemy, dare I say it, are a cut above your normal signing session - arguably the greatest band ever in history coming to your shop.
Barry said the Urban Myths episode was ‘very touching’. “I’m really pleased with the tenor of it, it’s really sweet.”
A disbelieving Kevin made sure he snapped an in-car selfie with the band - Chuck D and Flavor Flav, plus their entourage - which went viral and was seen across the world, generating ceaseless puns about the hip-hop troupe needing to 'fight the power' of Sheffield's evening traffic.
The episode is described by Sky as 'a funny and thought-provoking road trip set against a soundtrack of Bohemian Rhapsody'.
Queen's song came on the radio during the band's journey through Attercliffe, prompting a 'Wayne's World moment', as Kevin described it at the time. “I was looking in the rear view mirror thinking, ‘Is this actually happening?’”
The show is lined up for broadcast on May 24.
