The 22-year-old was blasted in the neck with a pellet gun at point-blank rank in Meersbrook Park on Thursday evening, shattering his jaw and teeth.

His mum, who has asked for her and her son to remain anonymous, said he underwent extensive surgery on his jaw on Friday, when a metal plate was fitted.

"This is to enable the swelling to go down inside his throat and mouth. It will be a long recovery process."

The gunman is described as white, between 23-30 years of age and of slim build with dark, scruffy shoulder length hair.

The victim's mother has offered a £500 reward for information on the attacker.

The victim was walking through the park at around 6.25pm when, according to his mother, a man held a gun to his head before shooting him through the neck. She said the gunman had asked for cigarettes and cash before opening fire.

Anyone with information is asked to call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 773 of April 26.
