Sheffield sex abuse victims praised for bravery

Victims of a fake NHS worker who were plied with alcohol and drugs before being sexually assaulted have been praised for their bravery in coming forward and giving evidence against their attacker.

Dean Chambers, aged 49, of Green Oak Road, Totley, was jailed for five years and three months after being found guilty of two counts of sexual assault, one count of administering Class C drugs and one count of perverting the court of justice, following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Chambers abused his position of trust as an NHS governor to meet vulnerable victims before going on to sexually abuse them between.

He would wear a fake NHS badge and visit places including soup kitchens and homeless shelters to meet women.

He was found guilty of offences relating to five women.

Detective Constable Kelly Skiller, who was in charge of the police investigation into Chambers, said: “He took advantage of vulnerable service users during his short time as a governor for the NHS.

“After being released from his position due to concerns for his behaviour, Chambers went on to target vulnerable women in Sheffield over a period of two years, inviting them into his home and plying them with drink.

“He’d then give them prescription medication, before sexually assaulting them, taking pictures and videos of them as he subjected them to a horrific ordeal.

“This man deliberately sought out vulnerable women within the community to take advantage of them for his own sexual gratification.

“Chambers denied the allegations made against him and as such, his victims had to recount details of his horrific offending in court.

“I’m pleased that he has been found guilty by a jury and jailed for these crimes. I hope this goes some way towards helping the victim’s continue moving forward with their lives.”

Temporary Detective Inspector Richard Wallis, from South Yorkshire Police's protecting vulnerable people unit, said: “The conviction of Chambers was made possible thanks to the combined efforts of all involved, including the ongoing support of the victims, who I would once again like to praise for the courage and bravery they have shown.”

Chambers has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely.
