Sheffield-set play 'one of top five shows' to see in New York

A play set during the Blitz of Sheffield is wowing audiences stateside and has become one of top five shows to see in Manhattan.

Operation Crucible is set on the night of December 12, 1940, when Nazi bombs reduced parts of the city to rubble and claimed the lives of about 600 people.

The play is currently wowing audiences at 59E59 Theaters in New York as part of the Brits Off Broadway season.

Reviewer Ben Brantley praised the production and said: "I had the good fortune to catch this efficiently harrowing production in London at the tiny Finborough Theater, and it wasn’t just the size of the house that induced a vivid sense of entrapment."

Operation Crucible was the first play to be written by Kieran Knowles, who also stars in the production.

Kieran is also currently adapting it for Radio Four.
