The Beast from the East has played havoc with transport across Sheffield, making road conditions treacherous and forcing bus services to be suspended.

As a result, many schools have been forced to close their doors to students and staff for the past three days.

The news has no doubt come to the delight of thousands of schoolchildren as they enjoy a surprise break from the classroom.

However, students at one Sheffield secondary school haven't been so lucky.

One parent took to Facebook on Thursday to share a text that she had received from Newfield Secondary School on Leeds Hall Road.

The message read: "Due to poor weather conditions school is closed today. We are aiming to open on Friday, March 2 at 10am. Further updates to follow.

"Additional homework will be published on Show My Homework this morning. Please encourage students to complete these tasks."

The request from the school did not sit well with the parent of a Year 7 pupil who said: "So instead of enjoying yourselves sledging and watching films how about some extra homework!

"What a bunch of miseries! Get stuffed, we're off to the park."

Other parents were quick to respond to her views with some branding the school as 'spoil sports' and 'party poopers'.

But, should schools be expected to set homework over snow days? Let us know what you think.
