Sheffield Sea Cadets Corp put on a display of their skills in the city - to help raise funds, along with awareness of what the local charity has to offer.

In front of Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun Talib Hussain, local dignitaries and their family and friends, the Cadets performed several displays, marches and drills at the Royal Victoria Hotel.

The unit is currently working towards raising £500,000 to support its relocation to new premises, due to their increasing numbers.

Petty Officer Chris Knapton, Commanding Officer of Sheffield Sea Cadets, said: “On behalf of the command and unit management team we would like to say how immensely proud we are of the way the staff and cadets performed during this evening, which also showed great team work and a demonstration of what our ship’s company can achieve together.

“I also believe we have introduced the cadets to the business community of Sheffield, which will enable us to gain support from the community with our vision to move units in the near future.”

Commander Charles Bagot-Jewitt, The Sea Cadet Corps’ Eastern Area officer, added: “This was a very well organised and choreographed evening and it provided a most effective launch pad for an important appeal which will shape the future of Sheffield Sea Cadets for many years to come.”

One of the highlights of the evening was the Field Gun Display, a traditional Navy display which the cadets performed for the first time in front of members of the public, having begun training only eight sessions prior to the event taking place. Other displays included the juniors division of the unit, aged 10-11, performing a ‘crossing the line ceremony’ in naval tradition, for when sailors at sea cross the line of the equator.

The Sea Cadets is a national charity set up to help develop young people aged 10-18 years old, offering opportunities for excitement, adventure and personal development as well as learning new skills and making new friends. The Sea Cadets is currently based at Conquest House, on Stanley Street in Sheffield.
