Sheffield schools trust aims to tackle community problems

The Oasis Charitable Trust is starting the project in Darnall and Attercliffe, with the aim of bringing people together and helping to tackle the challenges they face.

The trust is responsible for Oasis Academy Don Valley, Oasis Academy Fir Vale and Oasis Academy Watermead. The hub will be based at the Don Valley school, in Attercliffe's Olympic Legacy Park, but will work across the city.

Newly-appointed hub leader Thomas Horton said: "Our ultimate aim is to build inclusive communities in which everyone can be the very best version of themselves.

"This is encompassed in our logo – we call it our circle of inclusion or our ‘messy O’.

"It represents that inclusion can be messy at times – it’s always easier to exclude people than include them – but we’re committed to it nonetheless, because nobody should be left out or marginalised."

Mr Horton added: “We’re already working closely with key stakeholders to ensure that we can provide the very best of opportunities for the community.

"We want the Oasis Academy Don Valley to be a thriving community hub and we invite the whole community to join us."

Mr Horton said the hub's aim was to work with a variety of other organisations and sectors, as well as individuals, to respond to specific community needs.

Oasis Community Partnerships CEO Dave Parr said: “We’re delighted to be working with local residents in Darnall and Attercliffe and all those at Oasis Academy Don Valley to establish a new Oasis community hub in the city.

"Our goal is to work with and alongside the entire community to ensure that this area of Sheffield further develops into a place where people feel proud to live, learn and work.

"I’m extremely pleased that Tom Horton is stepping into this new role as Hub Leader and am therefore excited to see both the Hub and the entire neighborhood grow and develop in the coming years.”
