Sheffield schools show improvement in GCSE results

Many city schools have reported record-breaking results, with most showing improvement on last year’s figures.

At Silverdale School more than 80 per cent of pupils achieved the ‘gold standard’ of five A* to C grades including England and maths, a result the school called ‘record-breaking’ and a five per cent increase on last year.

Headteacher Roisin Paul said: “I am delighted with the results and our success reflects the hard work of our students, the dedication of our staff and the excellent support we receive from our parents.

“These fantastic results place us in a strong position as we enter into an exciting new era as sponsors of the brand new school planned for the Bannerdale site.

“We are looking forward to working in partnership with the local community to continue to build on our successes.”

At Tapton School 75 per cent of pupils got five A* to C grades including English and maths, with 37 per cent of grades at A* or A. Forge Valley School, part of the Tapton School Trust, reported a 56 per cent rate of five A* to C grades including English and maths, while 39 per cent of pupils achieved the same grades at Chaucer School, also part of the trust - a 14 per cent improvement.

The trust’s chief executive headteacher said it was ‘great to see high success’ and added: “We are particularly pleased with the improvement across all subjects at Forge Valley.”

At King Edward VII School, 62 per cent of pupils got A* to C including English and maths, and 10 per cent of all grades were A*.

Headteacher Beverley Jackson said: “At King Edward VII we are delighted that again our students have fulfilled their potential at all levels.

“Our students and their teachers deserve our praise and congratulations. The unstinting support of parents is also a very precious asset which has helped yield a good set of results.

“This is further confirmation of our good judgement from Ofsted.”

At Outwood Academy, 67 per cent of pupils achieved A* to C including English and maths. This is in line with last year and a big improvement on 40 per cent in 2013.

Principal Richard Brooke said: “My congratulations to students and staff on what is another outstanding set of results.”

And at High Storrs School the rate of five A* to C with English and maths was 66 per cent.

Headteacher Andrew Walton-McBain said he was ‘delighted’ with improved results, adding: “We are especially pleased with the strong performance of students of all abilities across the school and those students in Years 9 and 10 who took GCSE examinations this summer.”

Handsworth Grange Community Sports College assistant headteacher Kate Grapes said: “We are delighted by the results this year, particularly the progress made by all of our students. We would like to thank all our staff, students and parents for the continued hard work and support in achieving this success.

“Our results this summer represent our best ever progress. We are extremely proud of our students, 100 per cent of whom will leave us with five or more relevant qualifications. This in itself is an excellent example of the opportunities provided for all of our students to achieve their potential, and beyond.

“Staff and students have worked tirelessly and are reaping the rewards. Over 80 per cent of our students have achieved outstanding progress.”

At Sheffield Park Academy 66 per cent of pupils got five or more A* to C grades including English and maths – an increase on last year’s results.

Executive principal Craig Dillon said: “These results demonstrate considerable, sustained improvement over a number of years now at the academy and reflect the hard work and enthusiasm for learning shown by our students. Everyone should be very proud of what they have achieved.

“Thank you also to staff who set such high standards for our students and have supported them throughout their studies. In particular, I would like to congratulate senior leaders Sarah Szafraniec and Claire Bailey, whose excellent leadership and dedication has ensured another successful Year 11 cohort.”

Don Valley Academy pupils got the best results in their history this year, with 58 per cent achieving five A* to C grades including maths and English.

Principal Karen Squire said: “I would like to congratulate the students and thank that the students, staff and parents for their hard work and commitment this year. These results clearly reflect the outstanding effort shown by all and follow our successful A-level and vocational results last week.”
