Sheffield schoolboy's letter-writing skills scoop prize

Flynn Rogers, aged six, of Stocksbridge, has been crowned as one of the two Yorkshire and the Humber’s winners of Royal Mail’s Young Letter Writer of the Year Competition.

He will now go through to the UK-wide final stage of the competition as one of 24 national finalists.

Proud mum Kirsty Rogers said: “I am really proud of Flynn. I was so surprised when we heard he had won in Yorkshire and Humber. He is a little star.

“The letter took a while to write, but his dream job took no deciding, he immediately chose a lifeboat man and, more specifically, the navigator because of his love of maps and Geography.

“Flynn adores lifeboats and visits every day of every seaside holiday we go on so I wasn’t surprised by his choice.

“I feel sure that in the future he will make a great lifeboat man, should he live a little nearer the sea.”

Flynn, who won the under-11 age group, used what he had learnt at the nursery to help him writing his winning letter.

“Flynn has a real love of reading and can often be found with a book, or lifeboat magazine, in his hand,” said Kirsty.

“When he was entering the competition, he said that he knew how to write a job application because he had to write one at school, he knew that he needed to write down why he would be good for the job.”

Flynn, a pupil at Stocksbridge Nursery Infant School, has won £200 in vouchers for himself and £200 for his school.

Kirsty said he is unsure what he will spend his vouchers on – but knows what he wants the school’s vouchers to be spent on.

“Flynn really wants a globe for his classroom and he’s hoping the school will spend some of the vouchers on that.”
