IT meant the world to three Sheffield youngsters when they captured first prize in a city-wide geography quiz.

Newfield School pupils Liam Morgan, Finlay Stafford and Harry Heyworth won the Sheffield round of the Worldwise contest run by the Geographical Association.

The lads defeated teams from runners-up Birkdale, King Ecgbert, High Storrs, Silverdale, Meadowhead and King Edward VII, at the event held at King Edward VII upper school.

Worldwise is organised each year by the association to get as many children as possible interested in geography, and also to increase the appreciation of their role in today’s world.

The teams had to answer questions based on maps, fieldwork and general geographical knowledge.

The quiz seeks to bring geography to life as a subject and in one of the most popular rounds youngsters answer questions on topics that have been in the news over the previous year.

Subjects covered in recent years have included eco-tourism, the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and the race to develop mineral wealth in the Arctic Circle.

As winners of the competition, Newfield will now go on to represent Sheffield in the national final of Worldwise, which will feature a fieldwork challenge weekend in Exmoor during the summer term.

Jane Waterston, head of geography at Newfield, said: “This was the first time Newfield has entered a team in the Worldwise competition so we were thrilled to win.

“It was a very good evening and the spirit of friendly competition between the schools was excellent.”

The Geographical Association is based in Sheffield.
