Sheffield school expansion verdict scrutinised

The decision to expand Ecclesall Infant School's capacity from 180 to 630 pupils will come under further scrutiny at a council meeting.

Cabinet members approved proposals to expand the school to 90 places per year, starting next September, as well as widening the age range to take children up to Year 6, or age 11, last week.

However, the move has been ‘called in’ for scrutiny by Graves Park Lib Dem Coun Steve Ayris, and will be discussed at a meeting of the council’s children, young people and family support committee next Wednesday afternoon.

A report to cabinet members said a rise in the birth rate, and the ‘significant movement’ of young families in to the Ecclesall area, had been an ‘increasing trend’ in recent years.

The expansion is expected to cost around £5 million, and is part of a package of measures to create more places across the city.

Silverdale School is to expand its entry numbers and two academies will be built – a secondary school on the former Bannerdale Centre site, and a ‘through school’ for two- to 18-year-olds on the old Pye Bank School site in Pitsmoor.
