Big-hearted people are urged to sign up for a new Sheffield run launched today to promote life-saving organ donation.

The Star Donor Run will see people running alongside inspirational transplant survivors in one of the final public events at Don Valley Stadium before it closes.

It takes place on Saturday, August 17, as part of the Westfield Health British Transplant Games, which are being held in Sheffield this year.

The Gift of Life campaign aims to sign up 12,000 South Yorkshire people to the organ donor register before the games – and has already passed the halfway mark.

Now the run is aiming to sign up even more.

John Timms, games event director, said: “The Star Donor Run is a chance for people from across the region to come and support our transplant athletes and actually take part in one of the events at the games.

“Every athlete has undergone at least one life-saving transplant and it means so much to them to see local people come and get involved in actively promoting organ donation and demonstrating the importance of having your health.

“Anybody can enter – whether you run, walk, do it on your own, as part of a team of friends or colleagues – it’s a fantastic opportunity to take part in one of the last runs to happen at Don Valley, while supporting a great cause.

“Entrants can also choose to fundraise or make a donation to Sheffield Hospitals Charity, which is supporting the games as a whole this year.”

Sheffield Hospitals Charity donated £25,000 towards the games to help boost organ donor awareness and is the official run charity.

David Reynolds, charity director, said: “Our involvement means that we can help drive awareness of the importance of organ donation in the Sheffield region, and of the crucial work our charity does by using kind donations from the public to help improve the treatment and care of local patients including those who need life-saving transplants.”

Both a 5K and a 3K fun route will feature in The Star Donor Run.

Entry costs £8 for the 5K and £5 for the 3K route.

The transplant games take place in Sheffield from August 15 to 18.
