A Sheffield road has been closed by police this afternoon due to the discovery of a suspicious package.

Officers were called to a building on Gibraltar Street at around 3.25pm after a suspicious package was found by workmen.

The road has been closed as a precaution while police carry out enquiries.

Officers have asked motorists to avoid the area and say the road will remain closed for some time.

Eye witnesses said there had been a number of police vehicles at the scene as well as paramedic rapid response vehicles and an ambulance.

Alid Mohammed, a waiter at the Seven Spices Indian restaurant located nearby the scene, said officers had allowed him into work but said the road could be unsafe.

He said: “They explained some workmen were clearing a house and had come across a suspicious package.

“He allowed me into the restaurant but said not to go out onto the road because it was unsafe and that the package could be explosive.

“I’ve got bookings so I’ve updated customers but I’m hoping it clears up soon.”
