URGENT calls have been made for a streetlight to be replaced on an alleyway in a Sheffield neighbourhood as the nights draw in.
The light on the steep walkway known as the ‘46 steps’, which links Nicholson Road and Shirebrook Road, Heeley, was removed a year ago.
Richard Shaw, a Nicholson Road resident and Liberal Democrat activist, said he raised the problem with Sheffield Council in April and collected 30 signatures on a petition demanding the light be replace d. He was told the light would be put back.
But six months on, it has still not been replaced.
Mr Shaw said: “The steps are difficult to use in the dark and potentially unsafe.
“Even residents who live next to it would rather take a long diversion.”
After complaining again last month, Mr Shaw said he was told replacement of the light was on hold due to a review of Sheffield’s street lighting as part of the £2 billion Streets Ahead scheme to resurface all roads and pavements, and replace lampposts.
Mr Shaw said: “This is not good enough. This convenient thoroughfare has been left without proper lighting for over a year and residents want it replaced.”
Coun Jack Scott, Sheffield Council cabinet member for environment, said: “The street light will be replaced next week.
“I can only apologise that these residents were left without a street light for so long.”
