Sheffield residents fear Government proposals could 'put people off from learning to drive'

People could be put off from learning how to drive after the Government revealed plans for tough new restrictions on motorists who have just passed their test.

That is the concern of Sheffield residents after the Department for Transport announced it will be investigating introducing graduated driving licenses in the UK.

But the move has not gone down well with the majority of Sheffield Star readers, many of whom took to Facebook to vent their anger.

Ella Green said: “I was planning on taking my lessons next month so if this is how it will be I would just rather go on a holiday and not bother with it.

“If I would rather not do it then there will be a lot of others thinking the same as it will be a waste of everyone’s time.”

Lea Stancer said: “This is ridiculous. You pay all that money to pass your test then they are paying thousands to get insurance and now they want to tell them when they are allowed to drive and who is allowed in the car with them. David Aikman dismissed the proposals and claimed new drivers are being “tarred with the same brush.”

Roads safety minister Jesse Norman said that the proposed system will be introduced in Northern Ireland as a pilot which will ‘gauge whether the scheme should be introduced across the country’.

It comes after research revealed that motorists in that age bracket are involved in a quarter of all crashes on UK roads which lead to death or serious injuries.
