Police were called to Burgoyne Road, alongside a firetruck and two Northern Power grid vans following a gas leak which emergency workers said was caused by a cannabis farm.

Responders working to resolve the problem said the leak was a result of electrics which had been tampered with for the illegal plants.

One neighbour said: “You knew it was dodgy because two guys were sat outside the house when police arrived then legged it and left the door open.”

The bottom of the road was also cordoned off by police, while a second fire engine was parked on Ash Street in case of emergency.

Officers parked their cars on Infirmary Road, near to the tram stop while teams investigated the leak which is believed to stem from an illegal cannabis farm.
