Sheffield residents can ‘barely breathe from toxic air’ after huge waste fire

Firefighters have warned Sheffield residents to keep their windows closed and avoid the Neepsend area due to smoke-filled air caused by the large fire at Arthur’s Waste Management on last night (May 28).

Six fire engines attended the scene at Parkwood Road at around 9.50pm, and two remain at the scene today to battle the blaze.

The blaze did not spread to any other buildings, and nobody was injured.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Due to the large fire on Parkwood Road in Sheffield, firefighters are asking people to keep their doors and windows closed due to the smoke and to try and avoid the area if possible.”

Residents in the area have complained about the impact of the smoke in the air.

One wrote: “Is the fire put out? We can barely breathe in Kelham Island, the air feels so toxic and heavy it woke us up!”
