Sheffield rescue teenager wins award

Izaac Jones, of Hathersage, who is a Cadet at St John Ambulance’s Hope Valley unit, has received a Regional Director’s Letter of Commendation in recognition of his actions during last year’s severe flooding in the area.

On November 21, Izaac came to the rescue of a couple trapped in their car due to the flooding.

Using a ladder to the garden wall at his home, he helped the couple to climb to safety.

His quick-thinking was recognised in the community at the time, and now Izaac has also been formally commended by Bruce Leeke, Director of St John Ambulance’s East Region.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service Watch Manager Richard Percival, based at Hathersage Fire Station, said the 13-year-old had saved the people in the car.

“Izaac’s quick-thinking and bravery are truly commendable.

“His rescue of the trapped persons, in a very dynamic incident, undoubtedly saved them from any more trauma. Well done Izaac.”

The 13-year-old has been a St John Ambulance Cadet for three years.

His mum Sarah attributed the training he had received as a contributory factor towards his actions on the night of the flooding.

Izaac is particularly keen for other young people in the area to enrol as a St John Ambulance Cadet.

Not only are cadets taught first aid, they also learn a wide range of other skills including communications and working in the community which could lead to them potentially being the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
