Sheffield pupils take the news seriously

Pupils at Owler Brook primary school, Wensley Street, who are taking part in our Reader Passport challenge, produce their own monthly school newspaper as part of an after-school journalism club .

The newspaper is sold to their class mates for five pence - and all the money it makes is given to charity.

Four of the pupils taking part in the scheme, who are also part of the journalism club, told us that they enjoy reading The Star on a regular basis.

Hasan Hussain, aged 11, said: “I read The Star newspaper twice a week. I like the serious news stories best, like the crime stories.

“I like looking at the pictures and then reading the extra information in the box underneath to find out more about it.”

Zara Shayciq, aged 10, also likes reading serious news.

“I like reading about politics and what’s happening in the world. I like finding out about things that you don’t know.

“The Star might give out warnings about things that have happened so you can be aware of things that have happened around you. When I’m looking through the paper, I look at the headlines first to decide which stories I want to read.”

Ali Alansi, aged nine, likes the sports stories.

“I like to read about stuff that you didn’t know about before. It’s important to know what’s happening around the city. I like the sports stories too, and I like looking at the pictures because they make you want to read the story.”

Maryam Ahmed, aged nine, added: “I just like reading everything in The Star, I like it all. I’ll have a flick through all the pages and sometimes I look to see if their are any games.

“When asked if they would consider a career in journalism in the future, all four pupils said they may do - although Hasan said he thought that being a reporter would be hard.
