Sheffield pupils in road safety challege

Earlier this month, Oasis Academy Fir Vale, on Owler Lane, were delighted to receive one of eight whole- school prizes for having the highest percentage of pupils completing the Travel Challenge.

The get active while getting to school scheme during the summer encouraged schoolchildren across the region to choose an active way of getting to and from the classroom over two school weeks.

This included walking, using scooters or cycling, or even parking and walking part of the way.

The judges were particularly impressed by the academy’s road safety officers taking the lead in getting the children to promote their safe travel through the use of song while at the same time crossing the roads in safety.

The road sense challenge was designed to improve the health and wellbeing of all the pupils and their families, to encourage pupils and families to be more active.

It was also designed to reduce congestion and parking problems around schools and in addition it was to promote active travel for the journey to school and for families to continue after the challenge.

Speaking about the academy winning the award, Oasis Academy Principal Helen Round said: “The pupils are delighted to win this award, which they richly deserve.”

She added: “At the academy we were so impressed with their commitment to being active and for walking and riding to school, and I must say they really enjoyed it.”

“I’m delighted to say that many of our children have continued to walk to school after the end of the challenge, making them more active and making the parking situation at the beginning and end of our school day safer.”
