Over 200 primary and secondary school pupils were involved in this year’s Sheffield Schools Bouldering Competition that took place at the Climbing Works recently.

Organisers told all competitors that the event was not just about the winning, but involves trying a new activity that promotes fitness and is enjoyable to do.

Most of the young participants had had no experience of climbing at all!

Primary school awards were won for the title of fastest male (Carterknowle Junior), fastest female (Prince Edward Primary) and team award (Prince Edward Primary).

A total 10 different challenges were possible, and the day culminated in an individual final for the top performing five male and female competitors. Awards were handed out on the day of the competition.

Louise Perrins, Teacher at Wybourn Community Primary School said: “Our school loves taking part in this event each year. It doesn’t matter where the children come from or what experience they have had of climbing before, the competition is designed to be inclusive and positive for everyone involved.

“I am always impressed by the determination, perseverance and bravery of all the pupils competing, as well as the camaraderie that teams show in supporting one another. I think this event is of great importance in showing the children of Sheffield the amazing climbing opportunities that they have on their doorstep.”

The competition is organised by the Links School Sports Partnership, which includes the Mini Works and Thornbridge Outdoors.
