Sheffield pubs forced to close after water main bursts
The Closed Shop in Commonside, as well as The Hallmshire House opposite, had to close on Monday when water supplies were lost in the area.
Yorkshire Water engineers managed to fix the problem just before midnight, but by then both pubs had lost a day’s takings.

Hide AdThe same thing happened two weeks prior, with similar results.
Andy Stephens, landlord at The Closed Shop, said the pub legally could not open without water.
“It’s frustrating,” he added. “It’s my livelihood and that of my staff. It could be their rent for a week.
“It has a big impact, especially this time of year when the students aren’t around. We really can’t afford it.”

Hide AdAndy said he had spoken to Yorkshire Water on the phone during the day, and the company rang back in the morning to check the supply had been restored. But during the night the only contact he had was on Twitter.
“They told me they were on site when they weren’t,” he added.
Yorkshire Water apologised for the leak, and for another incident yesterday in Wortley Road, High Green, where engineers fixing a burst main damaged a gas service pipe. This in turn delayed city council roadworks.
A spokesman said: “Yesterday’s repair in Commonside took longer than we thought because the main kept fracturing and we had to dig out and replace a larger section of pipe than anticipated.

Hide Ad“We are very sorry that some of our customers experienced a lengthy interruption to their water supplies. We appreciate that our customers in Commonside were affected by another burst earlier this month and we will continue to monitor this section of our network closely.”
Regarding Wortley Road, the spokesman added: “We are liaising with National Grid to ensure the road is reinstated as quickly as possible once the gas pipe has been repaired.”
