A Sheffield pub is offering a free pint to drinkers who have registered to vote - but you'd better be quick if you want to get yours.

The Red Deer, in the city centre, introduced the offer to encourage more people to register to vote in the general election ahead of the deadline which falls at 11.59pm tomorrow (Monday, May 22).

To prove you've registered, you can produce your polling card at the pub in Pitt Street or show staff email confirmation of your voter registration.

Landlord Jacob Nickles said the offer was launched on Wednesday and by Sunday evening - with around 30 hours left to register - roughly 150 people had taken advantage.

"We thought it was relevant here because we're surrounded by university buildings and a lot of our demographic are 18 to 24-year-olds who are less likely to vote," he said.

"A lot of people who have got their free pint said they were already registered but some people said they would go and register so they could take up the offer, so hopefully we've encouraged a few more people to vote.

"With the current political climate, I think it's very important people have their say and contribute to global affairs. We don't talk politics over the bar but we want to engage people with it in a non-partisan way."

Mr Nickles said the offer was open to voters of any age, though most of those taking it up so far had been younger drinkers.

The pub is open until midnight on Monday, which is when the offer closes.

The Red Deer is one of a number of pubs across Britain taking part in the national 'Vote This Year Get Free Beer' scheme, which was started in a Bristol pub ahead of last year's EU referendum.
