A SMALL piece of graffiti scrawled on Jessica Ennis’s tribute golden post box, read ‘Go Jess’ The Star can reveal.

Royal Mail contacted contractors to repaint the box and fix a crack which had appeared in it on Monday, after someone scribbled on the mailbox.

Hundreds of people have criticised the culprit on the internet for defacing the box.

But today it emerged the writing was complimentary.

South Yorkshire Police said although they were aware of the incident, the graffiti had not been reported to them formally and they were not investigating it.

A spokeswoman said: “It was a tiny bit of writing and as soon as it was seen it was painted over.”

Dozens of people have queued up to have their photographs taken next to the post box in Barker’s Pool, which was painted gold on Sunday after the Sheffield star triumphed in the Olympic heptathlon on Saturday night.

Since her win Jess has been out celebrating with stars including the aptly-named Goldie, Paul Weller, cyclist Bradley Wiggins and Bond girl Rosamund Pike.
