Sheffield pensioner reunited with stolen jewellery

The 93-year-old woman, from Basegreen, had jewellery stolen in a burglary over two years ago but over the weekend two children playing in woodland found the valuables in a box in nearby woodland.

The youngsters handed in their 'buried treasure' to South Yorkshire Police and checks on police databases identified the owner.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the OAP was 'overwhelmed with emotion' when the jewellery was returned.

She said it was 'very rewarding' for officers to deliver the jewellery back to its owner.

"It's not very often we have such joy at being able to reunite belongings back to their owners. Today has been a great exception to this," added the police spokesman.

"Two children playing in woodland unearthed what they thought was buried treasure. Following a request from the children to help get this back to the owner we conducted a number of checks and finally found the owner.

"93-year-old Doris, from Basegreen, was overwhelmed with emotion when we greeted her at the door with her belongings. Doris confirmed the jewellery had been stolen from her home in a burglary over two years ago.

"Doris, fighting back the tears, said she could not believe her luck at being reunited with her jewellery box and other jewellery items including those owned by her late husband."
