Many people in their eighties are content to take life easy as they enjoy their retirement... but not Sheffield pensioner June Shepherd.

Instead of relaxing at home, June, aged 80, gives up her free time to work as a carer for Sheffield OAPs.

June, from Ecclesfield, joined care company Home Instead Senior Care three years ago.

She visits the homes of people of a similar age to herself to offer care and companionship.

June was recently presented with flowers and a cake by colleagues to mark her 80th birthday.

She said: “I love working with Home Instead and I relish my special times with all of the clients I care for.

“Fortunately my outlook on life and good health allows me to care for those people who are perhaps less mobile than me and I’m driven everyday by a real sense of purpose that I’m giving something back to my community and my clients.”

Bryn Evans, owner of Home Instead Senior Care, in Sheffield, said: “We have long believed that the over 50s offer a largely untapped and highly effective care resource and June is testament to this belief.

“We match our caregivers to clients and many of our clients would like to be cared for by someone closer to their own age, plus they have the life skills to understand the issues faced by those in need of care.

“It’s why we already employ many people who are over 50.

“Much of the work in the sector is part-time so is ideal for anyone looking to do a few hours to a couple of days’ work each week.”
